Sew-op Classes in October

Sew-op:

To serve as an educational hub for community members of all ages to learn fiber crafts, donate and repurpose gently used materials, and empower people through skill building.

Registration is required for all Sew-op Classes and closes 48 hours prior to the start of class. You can register and pay using the Co-op’s online calendar and finding the event you wish to attend. 

Alterations Sunday, October 8th, 1-3pm

In this class we’ll discuss altering clothes for fit, style, and practicality. Learn general principles and methods as well as limitations to changes that can be made. This class is tailored to the interests of the people present, so bring clothing you’d like to alter and a mental list of skills you’d like to acquire. *Basic sewing skills will be assumed.  Registration required: $20 for members, $25 for non-members. Class limited to four students, ages 14 and up. Register and pay online.

Learn Your Machine Sunday, October 15th1-3pm 

Have a sewing machine but not completely comfortable threading and using it? This class is for you! Learn how to fill and insert a bobbin, thread the machine, change the needle, set stitch length and width, use reverse, troubleshoot, and clean. Note: This is not a sewing class. We will assume you know the basics of machine sewing. Be sure to bring: your machine, manual, power cord, foot pedal, and at least one bobbin. Registration required: $20 for members, $25 for non-members. Register and pay online.

Beginning Patchwork Quilt Saturday October 21st9am-noon 

Discover what’s to love about quilting in this beginner lesson! In this class, you’ll learn the basics of patchwork and quilting while making 4-patch and 9-patch blocks which can be assembled to make a pillow or a mini quilt. Students will gain experience in all aspects of machine piecing simple patchwork blocks including: rotary cutting, pinning, sewing with a ¼” seam, chain piecing, strip-piecing and pressing. Best of all, pick up techniques on nesting fabric to get the cleanest quilting seams possible! **Prior Basic Sewing or equivalent sewing skills needed to take this class. Denim Mania Saturday, October 28th9am-noon 

Give new life to an old pair of jeans by turning it into something else. Like an apron, a tote bag, slippers, pot holders, storage buckets, coasters, and many other upcycled projects. One pair of jeans will supply material for at least 3 projects. Learn what is possible, sew-up a quick project, and go home with plans and ideas for other projects in this 3 hour class. We have plenty of jeans for you to use, or you can bring your own. *Basic Sewing or equivalent sewing experience required. Registration required: $30 for members, $35 for non-members. Class limited to four students, ages 14 and up. Three student minimum to hold a class. Register and pay online.

Halloween Costume Open Hours Sunday, October 29th, 1-3pm

Finish that Halloween costume just in time for your trick or treating! Get light assistance adding those finishing touches using the machines and supplies available. Experienced sewists are on hand for light assistance and advice but participants should have basic sewing skills. Free; $5 donation greatly appreciated to go towards operating the studio.

Open Hours at the Sew-op

DSCN1538A place where adults can bring their sewing (or other craft) projects and work on them using the machines and supplies available. Experienced sewists on hand for light assistance and advice. Ages 14 and up. $5 donation gratefully accepted to support the use of the Sew-op room.

If online payment is not possible to achieve then alternative means can be provided by reaching out to Jen in Education and Outreach using sew.op@uppervalleyfood.coop. Payment in cash or by check will need to be in-hand prior to the 48 hour window.

If a class does not meet the minimum level of participants before the 48 hour window the class will be cancelled. Full refunds will be given if the class is cancelled on behalf of the Co-op.
